This Month: Whiplash

Andrew Neyman is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite music conservatory. Terence Fletcher, an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man’s life. Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability — and his sanity. Starring Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons and directed by Damien Chazelle, this is a drama not to be missed.

“If a movie set at a music conservatory sounds like a) an MOR snore bore, or b) a Fame rip-off, think again. Whiplash could be titled ‘Full Metal Jazz Drummer’, as Miles Teller’s sticksman faces the terrifying tutelage of J.K. Simmons. Whipping up plaudits on the festival circuit, it’s as tense and taut as a snare drum.”
