Larry Hagman has died aged 81

Larry Hagman has died, aged 81. The Texas-born actor passed away on 23 November 2012, according to a family statement.

He died in hospital after suffering from cancer and cirrhosis of the liver, and was surrounded by loved ones according to a family statement.

Hagman was best known for his role as J.R. Ewing in Dallas . He played the role across hundreds of episodes in the '70s, '80s and '90s, and had even reprised it for the recent revival.

Despite being most famous for that TV role, Hagman did make some film appearances, with credits including Superman and Primary Colors .

In its peak, Dallas was seen by an audience of 300 million worldwide, peaking with the famous 'Who Shot J.R.?' cliffhanger, which ran from March to November 1980, across episodes 'A House Divided' and 'Who Done It?'

Hagman's Dallas co-star Linda Gray said in a statement: "He was the Pied Piper of life and brought joy to everyone he knew. He was creative, generous, funny, loving and talented and I will miss him enormously.

"He was an original and lived life to the full."
