Makoto Shinkai, the director of beloved anime movie Your Name, has shared an exciting update on his next film. The director replied to a fan on Twitter asking about how he is when he shared the news.
"The entire staff is working hard every day on my new film," he replied. "I'm confident it's going to be a great film, so please hang in there just a little longer until the announcement!”
His mystery next film was first teased way back at the end of 2024, when he announced on Twitter that he was working on a new project. At the time Shinkai teased: "2024 was, for me, a year spent on a new film. Building a brand-new world from scratch with my colleagues—one that no one has seen yet—brings such strong joy."
Updates since then have been pretty few and far between but if we know anything about the worlds that Shinkai creates, it's likely that this will be well worth the wait.
Your Name is still up there as one of the best anime movies ever made. Sitting at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie tells the story of a teenage boy and girl who attempt to find each other after switching bodies.
Shinkai followed up the success of that movie with 2022's Suzume, which equally won over viewers. Following a 17 year old girl as she attempts to prevent a series of disasters occurring around Japan, the adventure film also sits at an incredibly high 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
