It's in the name - Mortal Shell 2 Shells are kind of what the game is all about. As the Harbinger, you'll inhabit these shells, giving you abilities they learned in life.
There are a total of eight Shells in Mortal Shell 2, a significant upgrade from the first game, and some of those are reappearing characters from the original. Since each Shell bears its own unique ability and has its own main weapon, you'll want to know what each does and where you can find it - as well as which is the best. So, prepare to read the word 'Shell' a lot in the next few hundred words as I guide you through all the Shells in Mortal Shell 2 and their abilities.
The best Mortal Shell 2 Shells
While your favorite Shell may depend on your playstyle preferences, the objectively best Mortal Shell 2 Shells for standard gameplay are Tiel and Eredrim.
Tiel, one of the first Shells you can unlock is undoubtedly the best early-mid game Shell, thanks to his swift movement and cloaking ability. Eredrim is then the best Shell to unlock for the mid-late game.
Sester Genessa is another excellent choice, but she is unlocked in a slightly different manner to other Mortal Shell 2 Shells, so check out my separate guide on unlocking the Mortal Shell 2 Genessa Shell.
All Mortal Shell 2 Shells and how to unlock them
The eight Shells you can unlock and equip in Mortal Shell 2 are:
- Tiel, the Acolyte
- Proxima, the Broodseeker
- Eredrim, the Venerable
- Gragu, The Insatiable
- Smert, The Apostate
- Lazlo, The Justiciar
- Sariel, The Endless
- Genessa, The Wayward
The locations of Tiel and Proxima are both revealed automatically once you complete the prologue. As I've mentioned above, you should go looking for Tiel first as he's the better Shell of the two.
From here, you can speak to Zhirelle, the Shellkeeper at the Marrow Keep to get the locations most of the other Shells. You can choose which Shell you wish to unlock and spend between 3,000 and 10,000 Mortal Shell 2 Gloom to reveal their location on your Mortal Shell 2 map. It'll take a while to farm this much Gloom, especially if you're also using some to level up your Harbinger, so choose carefully which Shells to find first.

There is a ninth Shell, Harros, who returns from the first game and is once again the tutorial Shell, so cannot be equipped past the end of the prologue. That doesn't make him any less important, though, as you'll see when you take on the Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem.
Shell abilities and attacks can then be upgraded at the Marrow Keep by speaking with Zhirelle, the Shellkeeper or interacting with Beacons. When talking to Zhirelle, you can spend Mortal Shell 2 Glimpses to experience the lives of each Shell through their memories, learn more about their power, and upgrade them using the Bonding system, at which point you can unlock ability upgrades.
While each Shell has their own ability and weapons, Mortal Shell 2 Seals, Tarstones, and other items are applicable across Shells, so make sure you equip the best ones. Plus, make sure you know how to get your Mortal Shell 2 Shell back when you lose it.
