How to get the Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem achievement
The Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem is an early game boss and you don't have to defeat him - but you should if you want the achievement
The Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem is the first main boss you'll come across in the Soulslike game, and defeating it earns you an achievement. Unfortunately, you may quickly find that you don't have to defeat this monstrosity, as your first defeat results in a cutscene before the story continues.
So, in this case, how do you get the Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem achievement? Depending on how far you've come, there are a couple of options, and I've laid them out for you below.
How to get the Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem achievement
To earn the Mortal Shell 2 Tar Golem achievement, you must get the hulking great rock to zero health. This wording is very specific, as he dies either way. Since a cutscene plays out as soon as you are first killed by the golem, this technically means you must survive and defeat the Tar Golem on your first try.
However, there are two ways around this, and you may even need to use both.
Firstly, if you've passed the Tar Golem section already, you will need to start a new save to obtain the achievement. Sadly, there is no going back once the cutscene ends.
Once in battle with the Tar Golem, though, you can quit the game quickly upon defeat, before the cutscene finishes and the game autosaves, giving you as many chances as you need to defeat the boss.
At least this gives everyone a fair shot at fully completing the Mortal Shell 2 beta.
Some of the current achievements are beta specific, so won't carry on to the full game, along with much of your Mortal Shell 2 beta progress. I'm not sure whether the Tar Golem achievement is one, so I'd recommend getting it just in case.
