What is Gloom used for in Mortal Shell 2?
You'll pick up loads of Gloom in Mortal Shell 2, but it's not immediately obvious what it's used for
Mortal Shell 2 Gloom is a glowing white currency that you'll pick up as soon as you start chopping through enemies in the Soulslike game. You'll also be able to pick up Coins, but you can safely (and correctly) assume that this will be used with a trader at some point. Gloom, meanwhile, isn't so obvious.
More importantly, though, Gloom is dropped when you die. While you can recover it from the location of your death, you might be wondering what it does and, therefore, whether it's worth returning to the scene. I've got the long answer below, but, yes, you probably should try and get it back.
What is Mortal Shell 2 Gloom?
In Mortal Shell 2, Gloom is used to level up your Harbinger in increasing quantities, meaning you need to collect as much of it as possible.
You can level up at any Beacon, and this will tell you how much Gloom you need for the next upgrade, as well as the stat improvements you'll receive. Since Gloom is lost upon death, your best bet is to level up as regularly as possible, just in case you die somewhere you can't return.
Luckily, if (and when) you do die, your lost Gloom appears on the map, so you at least have some guide if you're unsure where to go or decide to try something else first.
While you can't use Gloom to upgrade your Shells in Mortal Shell 2, they do have their own upgrade currencies. Plus, you'll want to use Mortal Shell 2 Seals and Tarstones to make the most of both your Shell and Harbinger.

After studying Music and Lifestyle journalism and writing a column for a stylish lifestyle magazine in her hometown of Brighton, Danielle finally found her feet writing about videogames for WePC in 2021. She then honed her guides writing skills at PCGamesN between 2022 and 2026, when she took those skills to GamesRadar as a Guides Writer. Danielle's guides are a safe space - she definitely got stuck before you did, which is why she's perfect for the job. When she's not replaying the Silent Hill games or a more up-to-date single-player horror game, you'll find her fighting for her life in Dead by Daylight, tending to a garden in Stardew Valley, or doing both in Minecraft.
