Star Wars: Starfighter reveals new synopsis teasing Ryan Gosling's pilot on a mission that "may alter the future of the Force itself"
Star Wars movie Starfighter gets mysterious new plot description
Just over one week before new Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu is due to hit screens, it looks like Lucasfilm is quietly teasing another upcoming project as the official synopsis for Star Wars: Starfighter has mysteriously appeared online.
The new plotline, which has been posted on IMDb, reads, "In a rebuilding galaxy, a solitary pilot becomes entangled in a crucial mission as new threats emerge. Their journey may alter the future of the Force itself."
It is not clear how the new synopsis has made its way online, as it hasn't been posted on the official Star Wars site. Moreover, the news comes just one week after Star Wars Day 2026, which makes us wonder why it wasn't shared in celebration of May the 4th. Star Wars fans were a little disappointed over the lack of announcements this year, so choosing not to release the Starfighter synopsis on that day seems like a missed opportunity.
Although the new synopsis is rather cryptic and doesn't give us any real clues as to what Ryan Gosling's pilot will be getting up to, it's a step in the right direction. Before the new synopsis, the official Star Wars site described the upcoming project as "an all-new standalone adventure" that is "set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars." The listing also confirmed that Starfighter will take place five years after Rise of Skywalker.
Directed by Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy, the movie was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2025, and the first look at Gosling and co-star Flynn Gray on set was shared by the director in August 2025. The image shows the pair aboard what looks like some kind of ship in the middle of the ocean.
Starfighter also stars Mia Goth, House of the Dragon's Matt Smith, Lanterns' Aaron Pierre, Friday Night Dinner's Simon Bird, Hedda's Jamael Westman, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Goth and Smith are thought to be playing the film's villains.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027. For more, check out our guide to the Star Wars timeline, and keep up with upcoming Star Wars movies and TV shows heading your way.
