Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 5 features an extended flashback centered on Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson's friendship... and fans are wondering if one small line was a retcon, a blip from the writers, or just part of an ongoing conversation between friends.
Warning: Major spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 5 ahead!
In episode 5, Matt is faced with the decision to either save Bullseye from being apprehended by Fisk's men, or let him be killed by Fisk. While Matt is grappling with his morals (and good ol' Catholic guilt), we flash back to the early days of their friendship when the two were newer lawyers working together in a law firm (under the tyrannical rule of a crappy boss).
Article continues belowWhen Foggy's old bully Ray is at risk of going to prison, he and Matt find out that there's a discrepancy in the paperwork that makes the entire case null and void. Foggy says they should use this to get him off and give him a second chance. Matt argues that he's a bad person, who has harmed others, and deserves to rot in jail.
Foggy ends up not only letting Ray off, but giving him all the money he and Matt were saving to start up their law firm. This memory, of course, prompts Matt to save Bullseye. At the end of the flashback, Matt says, "Maybe instead of Murdock and Nelson, it's Nelson and Murdock." One fan pointed out that Matt and Foggy had this moment already... specifically in Netflix's Daredevil season 1 episode 10. In a flashback to their law school days, Matt says, "Nelson and Murdock. Sounds better."
One nitpick that I have... we already did this..#DaredevilBornAgain pic.twitter.com/So5D96DVgJApril 15, 2026
"I think it was an ongoing discussion, not a one-time settled thing," one fan wrote.
The best fan response, in my opinion, is the following: "I did think it was a bit weird hearing that but it doesn't have to be a retcon. They renamed it while still in college on a drunk night, possible they forgot next morning and just accidentally slipped back to Murdock and Nelson for a brief time until this. Doesn't break anything."

The Netflix scene took place during law school... and the one we see in Born Again took place well after... so maybe it's supposed to be a call-back to that special scene. Either way, it was so good to see Foggy again.
