Destiny: Rise of Iron hands you the keys to the Crucible with private matches

Destiny expansion Rise of Iron will add two much-requested features to the game's PvP when it launches September 20: private matches and clans. Praise the Iron Lords, hallelujah.

What this means is that if you want to set up a match with just your friends, you can do that. If you want to explore the PvP maps by yourself and enjoy the scenery, you can do that. You'll create your own lobby with your choice of game type, map, score limit, time limit, and Light level restrictions. Certain maps will also let you choose the time of day and vehicle spawns.
