Mortal Kombat 2 star Max Huang wants a Shaolin Monks spin-off after that standout Blue Portal fight
"Who would like to see a Shaolin Monks spinoff?"
Mortal Kombat 2 star Max Huang wants a Shaolin Monks spin-off following that pretty sick Blue Portal fight scene between Kung Lao and Liu Kang.
"Something that I personally would love to explore would be a Shaolin Monks spinoff," Huang told IGN. "Ludi [Lin] has talked about it. I've been talking about it. It would be great to see those two characters' origins and how they were raised by Bo' Rai Cho and trained and exploring the White Lotus. Yeah, the lore of Mortal Kombat is huge."
Given that Mortal Kombat 2, the movie, adapts the second Mortal Kombat game from 1993, it would make sense for its 2005 retelling, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, to eventually get its own adaptation as well. However, the Shaolin Monks game simply spans the events of the second game and doesn't focus on giving us the epic origin story of Liu Kang and Kung Lao (that, I would personally enjoy as a fan). As Huang said, a true spin-off would see their upbringing at the hands of Bo' Rai Cho (Mr. Puke Puddle himself) and explore the White Lotus Society (founded by Raiden and the Shaolin Order of Light.
The new sequel also did pretty well in its first weekend at the global box office... and a third movie is on the way (though it has not yet entered production). That said, we can expect to see more Mortal Kombat in the near future. Excellent!
Mortal Kombat 2 is in theaters now. For more of what's on the way in 2026 and beyond, check out our list of upcoming video game movies and our list of movie releases this year.
