What's out for mobile this week?

What's out for mobile this week?

Fans of remakes and cats are sure to get a kick out of this weeks batch of mobile releases as the games on our list seem to follow a certain theme. Of course, there were a few new IPs out this week too, so even if youre not a fan of felines or SNES classics (though, honestly, who isnt?), youre sure to enjoy at least one of these games on this list. Maybe you prefer mules or sad-looking blobs?

So grab your phone, tablet, or trusty thingamabob and start heading to the App Store or Google Play. Will you confirm purchase? We think you should.

Final Fantasy VI ($15.99)

Final Fantasy VI ($15.99)

Square Enixs SNES magnum opus is finally available on mobile devices, and Android users are the first ones to get to play it. This classic RPG features everything you remember from the original game, including all the dramatic cutscenes, songs, and intriguing cast of playable characters. What makes this version even better is that all graphics have been recreated, giving the game a brand new finish without removing anything from the experience. If you have yet to play it, do yourself a favor and download it now.

NBA Rush (Free)

NBA Rush (Free)

Mix basketball player and aliens and what you get is isn't NBA Jam, but rather, NBA Rush, an endless runner that lets you draft 90 NBA players from 50 teams to save the world from an extraterrestrial attack. Instead of just running, however, youll be dribbling down various locations, dodging obstacles such as alien laser beams. Get close enough to a pesky UFO, and you can even dunk them to smithereens. Why else would you dribble a ball during an alien invasion?

Magnetized ($2.99)

Magnetized ($2.99)

Magnetized is a minimalistic puzzle game that has you guiding a small square through over 80 levels of mazes. You need to use other squares on the screen to pull the black square around corners and through gaps to make it to the end of each level. Optional white squares are also scattered around each level for you to collect, adding some replay value to this brutally difficult game. Youll die a lot, but at least you have a catchy chip-tune soundtrack to listen to.

Cat Basket (Free)

Cat Basket (Free)

Its literally raining cats and dogs in Cat Basket, an arcade game that challenges you to see how many felines you can catch while riding on top of a giant cat elevator. You also need to knock away incoming dogs by tapping the screen to flip over your basket. Instead of the expected nine lives, you only get three. So if too many pooches fall on your giant cat, your rescuing days are over. Its about time a cat lady became the hero.

Ferris Muellers Day Off ($0.99)

Ferris Muellers Day Off ($0.99)

No, thats not a typo. However, this point-and-tap adventure game does contain plenty of references to Matthew Brodericks day off as well as a few other films from the 80s. A sick mule has decided to ditch work for the day and wandered off, so its your job to track him down and make that slacker work. The game features lots of puzzles along your journey and interesting characters to interact with. Do you think the mule will make it back home before anyone notices?

Baldurs Gate II ($14.99)

Baldurs Gate II ($14.99)

This mobile version of Baldurs Gate II not only features enhanced graphics, remastered art, and touch-screen controls, but it also comes with a plethora of expansions including Throne of Bhaal, A Shadows Life, Black Pits II. Seamless multiplayer modes also let you extend your single-player adventure, which can already take you plenty of time to complete. $15 gets you a pretty robust RPG on your iPad.

Small Fry (Free)

Small Fry (Free)

Small Fry is a lot like an underwater version of Tiny Wings. Instead of a bird, this endless runner (swimmer?) lets you play as a fish that loves to race across the ocean and jump into the skies. Using one-touch controls, you can challenge yourself to see how far you can go both underwater and in space and collect as many seashells as possible. Just watch out for that menacing shark or your swimming days are over.

Rainbow ($1.99)

Rainbow ($1.99)

Gray is a pretty drab color, so youd be sad too if your town and friends all looked gray. Rainbow is a puzzle game that lets you be the hero to depressed-looking blobs by bringing some color to their world. Each maze-like level has you guiding color strands from the rainbow to various villagers and to optional bonus stars along the way. Its amazing how a little color can liven things up sometimes.

Super Sanctum TD ($4.99)

Super Sanctum TD ($4.99)

Super Sanctum TD is another title to add to the list of great tower defense games available for mobile. This retro-styled game requires you to set up barricades and guns to stop enemies as they march towards your Core. Each level you clear gets you some Perk Points that you can use to power up your guns and deploy active abilities like air strikes that decimate anything on the battlefield. Hows that for some defense?

Hello Kitty Kruisers ($1.99)

Hello Kitty Kruisers ($1.99)

Remember Hello Kitty? She and her friends are back for more adventures, but this time theyve brought their own karts to do some racing. Taking place on land, air, and water, the game includes 16 tracks and a few challenges that go beyond just making it first to the finish line. Race against the clock in Time Trials or collect various cupcakes hidden on each track. It wouldnt be a Hello Kitty without some sweetness.
