Markus “Notch” Persson's Minecraft follow-up will have something to do with dimly lit conference rooms, colorful shapes, mannequins standing on coffee tables, and polygonal renderings of the soldier from Team Fortress 2. At least, this is what we can gather from the first set of screenshots to appear from Notch's forthcoming space sim, 0x10c.
The images were mined from the depths of 0x10c's website by reddit user TL10. They show off early models and environments from the title, which is said to take place in the year 281 474 976 712 644 AD. As explained on the equally bare-bones website, the game will cast players as the captains of their own ships, and challenge them to navigate the galaxy in search of loot, new worlds, and adventure. Each ship will also come equipped with a virtual 16 bit CPU that will be used to carry out various functions and allow more enterprising players an opportunity to tinker with the game's mechanics.
Notch originally introduced 0x10c as Mars Effect on April Fools, but quickly verified that it was an actual project (see: Notch reveals: Mass Effect April Fool is really a new game). He is currently working on “reaching some kind of first playable release” and hopes to repeat Minecraft's crowd-sourcing success by building 0x10c with input from players. You too can suit up and get involved in the 0x10c forum.
