While early Batman v Superman reviews aren't exactly glowing, it's important to Warner Bros. that it makes bank. As the second movie in DC's Extended Universe it's not just another superhero movie: it's an introduction to a handful of other comic heroes. One of those is Aquaman.
The King of Atlantis has served as the butt of many comic in-jokes for years, making it harder to establish that he's a badass force to be reckoned with onscreen. DC's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns isn't bothered about people's expectations. He's happy for audiences to go in with low expectations:
“Jason [Momoa] and I were talking about Aquaman and I love that people underestimate the character," DC Creative Officer Geoff Johns told ComicBook.com. "I feel like hopefully we’ll be able to share the love that we have as readers of the character because the jokes about him are fun, but he’s got so much depth to him, no pun intended. It’s really great to see him finally on the big screen.”
Following his cameo in Batman v Superman, Aquaman - aka Arthur Curry - will make an appearance in Justice League - Part 1 before going on to headline his own movie. While we're not exactly swimming (guffaw!) in details on the solo flick, we know that Amber Heard will co-star as Queen Mera and James Wan will direct.
Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Diane Lane, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Laurence Fishburne, and Amy Adams, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will arrive in UK and US cinemas on March 25, 2016.
