D&D Star Wars revealed for 2027, but fans worry this means a beloved RPG is dead

D&D Star Wars is on the way in 2027, but fan response seems divided.

Revealed in a surprise announcement at Gen Con 2026, D&D Star Wars is the second 'Universes Beyond' crossover after D&D World of Warcraft kicked off the initiative. Although we don't have many details yet, the idea was shown off via Darth Vader taking to the stage and it's being teased as part of a "Season of Rebellion." Both would strongly suggest we're going back to the original trilogy.

While there's a lot of excitement for the project (D&D's announcement post on Instagram has 30K+ likes, for instance, while the YouTube stream live chat was full of gleeful disbelief when Vader strode into view), feedback has been mixed so far. A lot of comments on the aforementioned Insta reveal voice concern that it's not a particularly good fit for either brand, while others are heartbroken that D&D Star Wars may spell doom for another well-loved RPG – Star Wars Roleplaying by Edge Studios.

We've had Star Wars RPGs before (including one from D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast based on Dungeons & Dragons between 2000-2010), but Edge's Star Wars Roleplaying seemed particularly well-liked. It covered three distinct eras, and you can find the Edge of the Empire starter set for a discount at Amazon if you're curious.

"That all but confirms that the FFG/Edge product line is officially dead and buried," writes DraethDarkstar on reddit. "Star Wars has had many RPGs over the years, but it's never been licensed for more than one ongoing at once."

I can't help but think they're right. Edge Studios doesn't seem to have released anything Star Wars-flavored for a long time; it's mostly focused its attention on Arkham Horror and Twilight Imperium systems (yes, these turn some of the best board games into RPGs). I've wondered before why it was steering clear of a galaxy far, far away, and this could be the reason.

In terms of D&D Star Wars itself, I'm cautiously optimistic. While I appreciate the sour taste left by Universes Beyond right now (especially after Magic: The Gathering's head designer said fans must adapt or "walk away" if they don't like crossovers for the card game, which uses the same Universes Beyond title), I think it's the best fit so far as sci-fi goes. A science fiction/fantasy book is a niche D&D's been missing for a long time, and while I'd prefer an original IP to fall in love with, Star Wars does meet the criteria. It's a world of magic, monsters, and swashbuckling adventure – just like Dungeons & Dragons.

Plus, it shouldn't be as in-your-face for Dungeons & Dragons. In MTG, Universes Beyond crossovers are impossible to avoid; they're legal in most formats so it's very difficult to dodge Spider-Man teaming up with Cloud from Final Fantasy.

Sure, it'll need some heavy editing just like Lord of the Rings did when it was brought into the D&D fold. Magic will need to be stripped away from most classes because it's simply not that common, for example (I guess many spells should be re-flavored as technology). Ship combat mechanics will need a lot of work as well, because the ones in Spelljammer: Adventures in Space left something to be desired. But otherwise, the possibilities are exciting. There's a whole galaxy of species to play with, the potential for unique subclasses tailored to tropes like the Han Solo-esque scoundrel or hot-shot pilot, and the thrill of planet-hopping on your shared hunk-o-junk ship. That sounds like a great combo to me.

Shadow of the past

This is far from the first time D&D's been used to represent an IP with a very different take on magic and fantasy; just take at look at Free League's Lord of the Rings Roleplaying (widely available at the likes of Amazon) for an example of what Dungeons & Dragons Star Wars could look like.

I'm not worried about it being hung out to dry either. My exclusive interview with D&D World of Warcraft principal game designer James Wyatt made the level of passion and care for these crossovers clear, so I'm confident it'll get the love it deserves.

Would I rather Star Wars be kept as its own thing? Yes, because I think it'd be easier and more to create a unique system than jury-rigging D&D to fit. But this seems to be what we're getting for now, and it's sure to draw countless new players to the game (which, let's be honest, is part of the reason why it's being done).

What do you think about D&D Star Wars? Sound off in the comments.

It's been a busy Gen Con for D&D already, and the show's only just started; D&D just revealed its long-awaited Dark Sun revamp, and it's resurrecting classic settings with beloved creators.

I've been writing about games in one form or another since 2012, but these days you'll find me managing GamesRadar+'s tabletop gaming and toy coverage (I spend my time here handling everything from board game reviews to the latest Lego news). I've also been obsessed with Warhammer since the 1990s, and love nothing more than running tabletop RPGs like D&D as a Dungeon Master.
