You'll soon be able to wander Azeroth on the tabletop, because D&D World of Warcraft is on the way.
Revealed by publisher Wizards of the Coast at Gen Con's 2026 Dungeons & Dragons show, the surprise crossover allows fans of the best tabletop RPGs to explore the MMO's world in pen-and-paper form for the first time since 2005. D&D World of Warcraft is also the first entry under the "Universes Beyond" label, a title borrowed from another Wizards of the Coast product known for its crossovers – Magic: The Gathering. The second looks as though it might be the newly-revealed D&D Star Wars.
D&D World of Warcraft will launch in November 2026. The crossover, which principal game designer James Wyatt promises will let you "explore Azeroth as you never have before" features a "Gameplay Expansion" sourcebook, a Dungeon Master screen, and a map pack crammed with tokens and battlemaps (much like the treatment for D&D's long-awaited Dark Sun revamp, which was also shown off at Gen Con).
You can now pre-order the core D&D World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion book, and it'll launch as part of a full retail release on November 17. If you want it before that, signing up to a D&D Beyond membership (the Master Tier version) will get you early digital access from November 3.
In terms of what you're getting inside the sourcebook, 11 new species are up for grabs, allowing you to play any race in World of Warcraft (including ones that are merely cosmetic in the MMO). Six brand-new subclasses are also making their debut here, like the iconic Death Knight, alongside three updated subclasses. You'll be able to use these across many notable Azeroth locations and seven dungeons based on beloved raids. Some of the MMO's biggest names are included with stat blocks too, from Arthas the Lich King to Jaina Proudmoore.
It's a development that I'm willing to bet WoW fans will get hot under the collar for. In my conversation with designer James Wyatt, the enthusiasm for the project – and everything it'd let players do that they couldn't in the MMO – was palpable. Wyatt's been playing World of Warcraft for years so is a passionate fan himself, and that really comes across.
The thing that may give fans pause is the inclusion of the "Universes Beyond" moniker, though. This has been a source of controversy in the Magic: The Gathering community due to their prevalence and these crossovers not always gelling thematically, with the debate rearing its head again when MTG head designer Mark Rosewater said fans must adapt or "walk away" if they don't like Universes Beyond. I can see the name being carried across to D&D raising hackles as a result.
This isn't the first time we've seen Azeroth in D&D. Back in the early 2000s, Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game (later renamed World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game) was built using 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons.
Still, there is an upside. Unlike MTG where different sets from various IPs are much more likely to encounter one another in a game (most modern Universes Beyond sets are legal in the majority of formats, so they're hard to avoid), D&D is more insular by design. Arthas isn't going to be found wandering the taverns of Baldur's Gate in your home game, for example, and you've got to opt in to those worlds when playing. As such, I don't think it'll be nearly so jarring. Plus, the D&D team also noted during a press pre-brief Q&A session that there isn't a quota for the number of Universes Beyond books that will be produced – not like half of all MTG products a year being Universes Beyond.
