Short story writing competition

SFX 's editor-in-chief to be a judge on writing compo with Anarchy Books and Jordan Reyne. Hurry, closes 14 August!

Jordan Reyne , New Zealand's premiere bloodthirsty Celtic rock and machine sounds performer, has teamed up with Anarchy Books to bring you a fresh short story writing competition - and SFX is on the judging panel.

Jordan Reyne's new album, Children Of A Factory Nation , is being released in September and follows a family who lived in Wales in the late 1800s during the Industrial Revolution. Like many alive in their time, they faced problems relating to difficult working conditions, poverty, and the tyranny of circumstance.

So, sharpen your pencil and tug your thinking cap on. Jordan and novelist Andy Remic of Anarchy Books are running a short story writing competition to celebrate! The challenge is to write a short story surrounding any characters from Children Of A Factory Nation using Jordan's lyrics or the facts about their real life counterparts as a starting point. The competition will be judged by Andy Remic , sci-fi and fantasy author, John Jarrold , esteemed agent with decades of experience in the publishing industry as both editor and agent, Dave Bradley , editor-in-chief of SFX magazine, Lee Harris , editor at Angry Robot Books, James Lovegrove , New York Times bestselling author, Gary McMahon , rising star of the horror genre, Jared Shurin of popular online magazine Pornokitsch, and the incredible Hugo Award winner Ellen Datlow , veteran editor in horror and sci-fi fields. That's quite a panel to shove your work in front of.

Stories should be no longer than 3000 words, and submitted digitally in a single file (either .doc, .rtf or .pdf). Deadline for final entries is Sunday 14 August. The winner and runners-by will be announced on Sunday 28 August. Authors must be willing to give six months exclusivity on the story (from the time of publication) if they win the competition. SFX is helping judge, but not administrate, the competition, so get more details, terms and conditions on the official entry page here .

Happy writing!
