Sony has enough RAM to see the PS5 through the year including GTA 6's launch
So says the earnings report
Sony published its Q1 Consolidated Financial Results today, and it's quick to assure prospective console buyers that it has enough RAM to manufacture its expected PS5 quota through the rest of the year. That's going to be big for anyone waiting on their purchase until GTA 6 hits the shelves, the title is expect to cause a surge in demand that Sony needs to be able to accommodate.
Despite component shortages, the PS5 is still readily available to buy today - albeit at an inflated price tag. While Sony may have enough new consoles to see them through the year I'd recommend anyone looking to get their hands on a new device now opts instead for cheaper certified refurbished stock from PS Direct.
The report makes specific mention of "the impact of memory market conditions on PlayStation 5 hardware," before continuing to state "there is no change to our plan for hardware profitability for FY26 to remain similar to FY25." Considering retailers have been stoking fears of a console shortage during Rockstar's release window, that's a relief.
With GTA 6 pre-orders already alive and kicking, and the game set to land as one of the biggest of the last few years (at least), a rush on consoles is expected, price increases be damned. Rising component costs have doubled down on previous supply shortage fears, after RAM shortages and soaring SSD prices dominated the first half of the year.
Sony's already selling fewer consoles than expected, though those expectations were likely based on a world where six-year-old hardware gets cheaper, not more expensive. 1.6 million devices were sold in the first quarter of 2026 (down from 2.5 million in the same period last year), albeit at a higher price. That means hardware revenue has levelled out at a 9.8% drop.
Will the PS5 see its own GTA 6 bundle options? It's looking likely Sony will package up its Pro and Slim devices with GTA 6 during that initial launch period, though I wouldn't put a bet on it. The brand has already come out the gate storming its allegiance with Rockstar, putting heavy emphasis on its range of consoles as the place to play GTA, a sentiment the developer has jumped on as well.
