Fortnite Chapter 3 is arriving very soon, and much earlier than we thought it was going to! If you've been following the progress of the perennial battle royale then you'll know that Season 8 is due to end shortly, and that we were expecting a standard transition to Fortnite Season 9 to come next and gently ease us into 2022. However, it seems that Epic have other plans, likely due to the expansion in season length meaning that the current chapter has already been running for over two years, and have announced that a Fortnite live event will conclude that chapter with an epic battle against the Fortnite Cube Queen. If you're looking for details on when Fortnite Chapter 3 will start and what changes are happening, here's everything we know about it so far.

When does Fortnite Chapter 3 start?

The Fortnite Chapter 3 release date hasn't been officially confirmed, but according to the current Season 8 Battle Pass, as seen on the Epic Games website and the in-game message on the Battle Pass screen, we can determine that the Season 8 Battle Pass, and with it Chapter 2, will end on December 4 with the finale event. This means that the Fortnite Chapter 3 start date will be on or after Sunday December 5, but there will most likely be some downtime to initiate significant changes before the next chapter begins.

What will be the biggest changes made for Fortnite Chapter 3?

At this point it's too early to say what will happen after the final confrontation with the Cube Queen has concluded, and what changes will be made for Fortnite Chapter 3. However, as we're moving on to a completely new chapter we can be confident that there will be significant adjustments, based on how much was amended in the transition to Chapter 2 back in October 2019. Not only was an entirely new map introduced, but fresh mechanics such as fishing and hiding were added, and the entire progress system was overhauled to focus on XP.

With that being said, a cinematic trailer for Fortnite Chapter 3 was seemingly leaked via a TikTok advert, which can be viewed in the embedded post above. In it, we see a cast of characters looking over the familiar Chapter 2 landscape, before an explosion seems to suck Jonesy through a wormhole into a large expanse of water while many alien spacecraft hover overhead. As the wormhole closes in the sky cutting off most of the aliens, a massive fallen ship crashes into the water sending a huge tidal wave over Jonesy as the clip ends. Whether this means we'll be starting the next chapter with a very watery map strewn with islands remains to be seen, and there is an implication that the aliens (or at least their crashed ship) could have a presence on the new map.

We're unsure what further details for Fortnite Chapter 3 will leak in the near future, if any, especially as Epic have reportedly been contacting prominent dataminers and asking them not to reveal details during the downtime before it launches, but if any more information gets out we'll let you know about it. In the mean time, make sure you've completed any Fortnite quests you have outstanding, and spend any remaining Fortnite Color Bottles on Toona Fish styles as they'll otherwise expire. Any unused Battle Stars will automatically be redeemed for the earliest available rewards, so if you have your eyes on adding anything specific to your locker then pick it up before the deadline.

How much will the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 Battle Pass cost?

Fortnite is free to play, but buying the Battle Pass will get you loads of additional rewards. The Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 Battle Pass will likely be available for the usual 950 V-Bucks, which means that it will be enough to purchase the smallest V-Bucks bundle in the Fortnite store, priced at $7.99 / £6.49. This will get you 1,000 V-Bucks.

It's possible to get a head start by buying the Battle Bundle upgrade. This will get you to Tier 25 on the Battle Pass instantly. Doing so will cost you 2,800 V-Bucks, which you can get for $19.99 / £15.99 (2,500 V-Bucks, plus 300 for free).

If you don't want to spend any money, you can always try to get free Fortnite V-Bucks for the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 Battle Pass, but don't fall for online scams! If you choose to save up some V-Bucks, remember that you only need to collect 950 of them to unlock the next Fortnite Battle Pass starting in December.

And that's all we know about Fortnite Chapter 3 for now, but with the launch of the new chapter imminent we'll have all the details very soon!
