Edge 290: Id's brutal return to Doom, the FPS that started it all

Id Software has undergone a great deal of change during a tumultuous few years recently. With all of the founders now focused on other projects and a stretch of development hell now behind it, the company has experienced something of a rebirth. And Doom, the fourth game in its legendary FPS series, is indicative of a studio working with renewed confidence after having remembered what made it special in the first place. For our cover feature we head to Richardson, Texas to play the game and speak to the people giving new life to one of the most influential series ever created. Issue 290 of Edge is available now in print, on iPad, Google Play and Zinio.

We also find time to drop in on Three Fields Entertainment for a round of Dangerous Golf, the unlikely new project from a ten-strong group of Criterion alumni who aim to redefine game physics. And we speak to Dominic Wheatley, Domark co-founder and now head of Curve Digital, about his return to the frontline of publishing and the potential for a Britsoft revival.

With the mooted VR revolution just around the corner, we look at how Oculus and HTC are finalising their plans. We attend London Mobile Games Week to find indie devs in fighting spirit despite overwhelming odds. And we learn about Channel 4's new publishing arm, All 4 Games.

Our The Making Of... this month recounts the tale of Psychonauts' troubled development, and how Double Fine's debut weathered a storm to make a spectacular comeback. In Time Extend we examine Fire Emblem: Awakening's equal focus on relationships and battling. And we spend some time with The Odd Gentlemen for Studio Profile, a company whose co-founders went straight from students to studio bosses. Finally, in My Favourite Game we speak to QI Elves and No Such Thing As A Fish presenters Dan Schreiber and Andrew Hunter Murray.
