Ninja Theory's Devil May Cry reboot actually takes place in alternate timeline

Next year, Ninja Theory's Devil May Cry reboot (entitled DMC) will be released, featuring a more youthful demon hunting protagonist. While he shares the same name as the Dante from the original Devil May Cry games, he's actually not technically a "younger" version of Dante. According to Dengeki PlayStation, this Dante exists in a parallel world. In other words, Dante from DMC is like the Captain Kirk from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot. Except, you know, with less lens flare.

Dengeki PlayStation (via Siliconera) doesn't give much more information, but it honestly makes sense - besides the fact that the new Dante has both demon and angle powers, keeping it in a different "universe" gives Capcom more options for the future. If the game is a massive success, the developers can continue to create games in this new DMC series without worrying about stepping on the toes of the original classics. If it's an absolute failure Capcom can just pretend it never happened, closing the alternate dimension as quickly as they opened it.

We're just hoping that they stay true to the "different universe" thing. The strangest part of the new Star Trek movie is when Spock from the original films stumbled out of a cave with weird dentures and spouted a bunch of nonsense to the new Kirk. If old Dante shows up and acts as a tutor to young Dante we're considering dropping the controller and walking right out of the room. Come on, Ninja Theory, let's see your signature tact, don't take the easy way out.

DMC is due out early next year for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
