The Witcher season 4 is now streaming on Netflix but before you step foot back on the Continent, you may want to know what you're in for. After all, Liam Hemsworth has taken over from Henry Cavill as Geralt, while critical consensus so far is looking considerably more healthy than previous years.

Below, we'll run you through the key info you need to know before binging The Witcher season 4, including news of a surprise film you need to watch after the finale. There's also recaps, reviews, and cast news to consider, as well as trailers for those still on the fence about joining The White Wolf once more.

If you're looking for Geralt and Ciri's next game adventure, however, there's a separate guide to The Witcher 4.

The first trailer for The Witcher season 4 was unveiled in early October, and you can watch it right now in the video above. In the footage, we see Geralt has assembled a ragtag bunch to accompany him across the Continent in search of Ciri, while Yennefer tells us that powerful mage Vilgefortz is building an army – and Ciri is stuck at the centre of it. War is coming!

Netflix previously released a teaser trailer providing fans with the first look at Liam Hemsworth's Geralt. While reactions proved divisive, he's certainly made the most of a thankless task.

Before we dive into mild spoilers, those who haven't dipped their toes into the new season yet should read The Witcher season 4 synopsis. After all, it sounds very intriguing. Per Netflix, it reads: "After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire – and finding one another again." We'd also recommend Netflix's own season 1-3 recap if you haven't caught up just yet.

Thanks to season 3 finale, we knew going in there were plenty of plot details that needed to be tied up. First of all, there was The Rats storyline as Ciri joined the group of young criminals. Ciri actor Freya Allan also took pride in diving into the source material for these scenes to really do them justice. If you ask us, her reading paid off.

Continuing the trajectory of the books, The Witcher season 4 dealt with the bulk of Baptism of Fire, the third of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels. We won't go into major plot spoilers here, but it revolves around Geralt joining a new group known as the hansa, which features Laurence Fishburne's vampiric Regis.

It also expanding on a fan favorite moment from the books, in which Geralt, Jaskier, and their assembled party pause their travels to enjoy some fish soup. During the scene, viewers are treated to flashbacks of each diner's past, with Jaskier's depicted as a musical in the show, with Regis' tragic tale told through animation.

Yennefer's task is a bit more straightforward: she is trying to bring Ciri home, while also dealing with the looming threat of Vilgefortz.

If you're curious on how that all came together, we have an extensive breakdown of The Witcher season 4 ending, plus a look ahead to The Witcher season 5.

The Witcher season 4 reviews

Despite saying farewell to Henry Cavill, The Witcher season 4 – in our writer's estimation – was one of the better chapters in the Netflix series.

In The Witcher season 4 review, Alex Zalben writes, "By ditching the aspects that didn’t work and keeping what did, The Witcher season 4 is a better, more focused, and most importantly, more fun season of the show, with some great action, big stakes, and an Empire Strikes Back-style setup for season 5. Bring it on."

IGN have given The Witcher season 4 a 7/10, though it fared less better in UK outlets such as The Guardian and The Independent, who both gave it two stars.

As well as Henry Cavill's exit from the show as Geralt of Rivia, some other cast members didn't return. Tissaia (MyAnna Buring), Lydia (Aisha Fabienne Ross), Filavandrel (Tom Canton), Artorius (Terence Maynard), Gallatin (Robbie Amell), and Rience (Sam Woolf) all died in season 3. Kim Bodnia, who played Geralt's mentor Vesemir has also pulled out due to scheduling conflicts. Scottish actor Peter Mullan (Baghead, Westworld) is rumored to be replacing him.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Geralt's game actor Doug Cockle revealed he was looking forward to seeing how Hemsworth fared in stepping into the sizeable boots of Geralt.

"He's great in all those action films that he's done, isn't he? He is wonderful. So I think he'll bring all that to it," Cockle said. "We'll see what he brings to the table. He's a good actor, so I'm really excited to see what he brings."

Liam Hemsworth, the star of The Hunger Games films (aka one of the best action movies of all time), officially replaced Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia.

Hemsworth confirmed his casting through Instagram. In the post, he wrote: "As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure."

"Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character," Hemsworth continued. "I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world."

Speaking to GamesRadar+, the cast praised Hemsworth's performance, with Jaskier actor Joey Batey noting, "The man is relentless. He was training and preparing and researching and everything. And he turned up fully formed."

On the thorny topic of Cavill's departure, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly, "He had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to. And for us, you don't want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don't want to do. I think that's why it felt like a really symbiotic decision."
