SFX Spurious Awards

Muppets Firefly , the Doctor Who spin-off that must happen, Hogwarts shenanigans and other nonsense

WE DEMAND A SPIN-OFF OF THE WEEK

Right who’s for a Victorian-set crime fighting show featuring a lesbian couple, one of whom’s a samurai-sword-swinging giant lizard? Hell, who wouldn’t be? In amongst a episode packed with so much jawdropping greatness, it’s amazing what an impact Madame Vastra (and her exceptional tongue) and sidekick Jenny managed to make in Doctor Who ’s “A Good Man Goes To War”. And not just on the Spurious Awards panel. Who forums have been bursting with demands for a Vastra and Jenny spin-off, and there’s even a Facebook page that’s packed with fan art. But what would the series be called? Cold Blooded Murder ? Scales Of Justice ? Green Victoria ?

UNEXPECTED GEEK OF THE WEEK

You know how normally it’s quite a thrill when a celeb outs themselves as a sci-fi geek on national TV because they bring a veneer of cool to the culture? That didn’t happen last Friday on Have I Got New For You when the show dealt with the issue of Steven Moffat giving the Daleks their P45s. Because some celebs just aren’t cool. Richard Madeley is one of them. When guest presenter Sharon Horgan and Paul Merton started dishing out all the clichés about you can defeat Daleks by running up stairs Madeley leapt in to point out that they can fly now, and have been able to for ages. The Spurious panel admits it should have been cheering him on for suck pernicketyness; instead there was more of a urge to put our fingers and go, “La la la, this isn’t happening” very loudly.

UNEXPECTED RETURN OF THE WEEK
Tron Guy is back, but not for long, it seems. And blimey he’s pushing that costume to its limits…

BEST BANDWAGON JUMPING OF THE WEEK
How Green Lantern can help sell your product without the need for any licensing deals.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Some people must have really dirty minds to spot something like this in the closing credits to Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban . Remember, the Marauders Map shows the footprints of everybody at Hogwarts. So what are these two up to, eh? Eh? (Via The Daily What )

TEASER FOR A NON-EXISTENT SHOW OF THE WEEK
So, does this snippet of Wonder Woman suddenly make you wish the show had been picked up for a series after all? No, us neither.

CROSSOVER OF THE WEEK
Last week we had Muppets Star Wars . This week it’s Muppets Firefly. We sense a trend happening here.

APOLOGY OF THE WEEK
Sorry for the brevity of Spurious this week, but the Awards Panel president is off on holiday for two weeks after today, and is rather busy packing. If you want to suggest some Spurious Awards while he’s away, then you can help the poor overworked staffwriter droid who’ll be roped into doing it by suggesting your own Awards Of The Week. Email nominations to sfx@futurenet.com .
