I'm still not over the fact that the new Virtual Boy for Switch 2 lacks a matching controller. While the goggles provide a pretty authentic way to play the retro console library, Nintendo really dropped the ball by not including a pad inspired by the original. However, modder RetroOnyx has stepped in and whipped up a wireless mod board for the OG gamepad that adds wireless support for the handheld, in turn making it compatible with the headset remake.
In a fresh video, RetroOnxy shows off the Switch Virtual Boy Wireless Controller in action. The mod effectively replaces the original innards with a new PCB, adding Bluetooth support for Ninty's best gaming handheld contender as well as PC and even Meta Quest VR headsets. It will apparently also work with Blueretro adapters like the dongle I'm using to pair the Switch 2 GameCube controller with the OG console, just in case you got a cursed setup in mind.
Not only does this OG Virtual Boy gamepad mod let you play the NSO library with dual d-pads and buttons in the original layout, but it also retains functions required for the new app. While buttons like Home and Capture are indeed missing, RetroOnxy has included handy shortcuts that will let you still access those navigational features and tap into perks like rewind.
I absolutely live for projects like this Virtual Boy controller mod, but since this is a small-scale project, the PCBs aren't cheap. You can grab the board for $99, which happens to be the same price as the Switch accessory, and if you don't already have the OG pad, that will set you back even more. The modder is also "collecting interest" for complete pads that use a 3D printed shell and third-party buttons, though, so that could be an option if you're serious about playing the NSO games with authentic controls.
I'm always somewhat hopeful that DIY projects like this will inspire Nintendo to actually go the full mile with retro remakes. It's too late to actually include a replica wireless gamepad with the Virtual Boy, but I'd even appreciate it if it did release its own controller and perhaps enable playing on TV as well as via the goggles. At the very least, Ninty could help this mod shine by enabling haptics in the NSO app, as RetroOnxy says that while the PCB boasts support, it'd be up to Nintendo to enable it in software.
The mod itself doesn't sound too difficult, but you will need to supply your own battery (RetroOnxy recommends one by Laserbear). You'll need to get your soldering iron out for a couple of connections, too, but that makes sense given you're replacing most of the insides. Ultimately, this is a project for enthusiasts since it's pretty hands-on and isn't cheap, but I'm still glad someone is out there showing Nintendo showing up.
