If your online algorithms have even a small appetite for gaming content, there's a good chance you've seen clips from Meccha Chameleon, the viral multiplayer sensation that's taking the internet by storm. The small indie game that could has now sold a whopping 15 million copies in under four weeks, making it both the year's best-selling and fastest-selling game.
Just in case it's missed your feed, Meccha Chameleon can loosely be described as a multiplayer hide-and-seek game. Before a round starts, the so-called Hiders will find a secret spot and paint their all-white bodies to hopefully camouflage into the background. The Seekers then walk around with their guns and shoot anything they suspect of being a Hider, sometimes accidentally gunning down suspicious rolls of toilet paper.
In two weeks, the game shot past seven million sales. Less than a month after the game dropped on Steam, Meccha Chameleon has now moved a whopping 15 million units, per the developer's recent short blog post.
"Thanks a million! Get ready for a new collaboration with a famous Japanese star next week," the dev writes.
Niko Partners video game analyst Daniel Ahmad tweets that the sales milestone makes Meccha Chameleon "both the fastest selling and highest selling game of the year." That means the small indie game has outsold heavy hitters like Resident Evil Requiem, Forza Horizon 6, and Crimson Desert - it's affordable price tag probably doesn't hurt, though.
"Also just to note that the two devs working on this game have done an amazing job updating it," Ahmad adds. "Often when small indie games like this blow up overnight, they can’t support the demand for updates / bug fixes. But MC has added new features and fixed bugs quite consistently."
