Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and the Star Wars game from former Uncharted lead Amy Hennig are still alive
The dream of an Amy Hennig Star Wars game isn't dead yet
The last time anybody saw hide or hair of Skydance's World War 2 set title Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra was at the 2024 Game Developers Conference. Beyond getting delayed from its original release date of holiday 2025 into the nebulous window of "early 2026," mum has been the word. That is until today, with Variety reporting the game is "still in the works" as part of a larger story on the evolving nature of Skydance's interactive projects following last year's merger with Paramount.
The bigger announcement this tidbit is sandwiched in between is the creation of Paramount Games Studio, which will merge the existing Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media studios under one name. The latter will be of the most interest to gamers, as it is the team behind both Marvel 1943 and Skydance's mysterious Star Wars game. As mergers and shakeups in the industry are often followed by project, or even studio, closures it is reassuring to know both projects are alive.
Since its founding, Skydance New Media has been a studio to watch, particularly because it was being led by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig. Marvel 1943, which sees Captain America teaming up with the Black Panther of the '40s, appears to pull heavily on Hennig's ability to create compelling action games with hints of Indiana Jones. Under the new studio merger, Hennig is moving from co-president of Skydance New Media to creative director of Paramount Games Studio.
While we haven't seen much of Hennig's Star Wars game, it's still a hugely anticipated release. Hennig previously dipped her toes in a galaxy far, far away with Project Ragtag, a Star Wars game in development at Dead Space studio Visceral Games before its cancellation in 2013. That project was pitched as a linear action title centered around a heist, and what little footage we got of it lives rent free in my head. With Hennig at the head, it is possible Ragtag may live on in some way at Paramount Games Studio.
The timing of the announcement isn't an accident either. Though, don't think that means we will see Marvel 1943 or the Star Wars game at Summer Game Fest. Variety confirms that Paramount Games Studio will announce its first game during the event later today at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. It'll be worth tuning in to see what the reveal turns out to be.
