007 First Light's Metacritic score might make the James Bond romp IO Interactive's highest-rated game yet, but GoldenEye remains king
Second best-Bond is good too, though
The first reviews for 007: First Light are in, and IO Interactive's latest is its highest-rated game to date.
Over on Metacritic, 007: First Light currently sits at a review score of 88 after 51 reviews on PS5, three on Xbox, and 24 on PC, and while it's not quite near the highest-rated Bond game – unsurprisingly, that's still GoldenEye 007 for the N64 at a score of 96 – it does sit firmly in second place. As for IO Interactive, however, it's the developer's highest-rated game of all time, beating Hitman 3, which sits just below it at 87.
At the time of writing, all but two reviews for the game are deemed "Positive" by Metacritic's standards, with the remaining two being deemed "Mixed" with a score of 7/10 for both – hardly a bad score in its own right.
In the GamesRadar+ 007: First Light review, Editor-in-Chief Josh West gave the game four out of five stars and said: "007 First Light is Bond's best game yet thanks to smart design decisions that make this a well-rounded spy thriller. Merging together moments of blockbuster spectacle with slower-paced stealth, this understands the appeal of spycraft and is able to deliver the fantasy in ways no other game can. Starring a young James Bond, this origin story can sometimes feel like just a beginning – but what a way for this spy's career to kick off."
However, it's worth noting that a number of outlets have yet to publish a review of the game, as critics report they didn't receive it until this past Friday. And while it's not a long game – with our guide: how long is 007 First Light reporting it to be 12-17 hours to do just the story content – it's only natural that some will want to spend more time with the game before publishing their thoughts. And thus, as more reviews come through, there's always the chance that that Metacritic score changes – although I doubt it's going to overtake GoldenEye.
