A Minecraft Movie 2 finds its Alex in Kirsten Dunst, after the star previously said she'd happily sign up "to make a pile of cash"

A Minecraft Movie 2 has found its Alex in Spider-Man's Kirsten Dunst – a joyous full-circle moment after the star said only last August that she'd happily appear in the video game movie sequel "to make a pile of cash." The news come via Deadline.

Alex was teased in the first film's post-credits scene, when Steve (Jack Black) knocks on the door of his former home in the real world, which is promptly answered by a red-headed stranger. "Is this about that chest in the attic?" the person, who is seen only from behind, says. "I'm Alex, by the way." Dunst didn't appear in the original film, with Alex played physically by Alice May Connolly, and voiced by Kate McKinnon.

One of two main, playable characters in Minecraft, along with Steve, Alex's most distinctive characteristics are her default green tunic and red hair, which she wears in a ponytail. It doesn't take a genius to work out why the team behind A Minecraft Movie 2 might have thought famous redhead Dunst would be a good fit for the character.

Directed by Jared Hess, the first Minecraft movie was an enormous hit in 2025, launched a wave of Chicken Jockey madness, and ended the year as the highest-grossing domestic release, just beating out Lilo & Stitch. The sequel was, unsurprisingly, announced soon after. A teaser poster confirming the film's July 2027 release date was released last October.

While plot details for the sequel are scant, producer Roy Lee recently hinted that big bad, the Ender Dragon, will make its fiery debut in the sequel. "A lot of people said, 'Yeah, just make that movie, but make sure the Ender Dragon is in it.' I think that's what a lot of the requests have been." Will Alex team up with Steve, Garbage Man (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) to take the fearsome beast down? With casting now fully underway, it won't be long till the first details are revealed.
