It seems as though Kane Parsons has started a trend with his hit A24 movie Backrooms, as Weapons director Zach Cregger is working on a horror movie based on another online urban legend.
Cregger is in the process of writing a movie based on the creepypasta Siren Head alongside Brian Duffield, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, and it's a pretty hot commodity. After five studios entered a multi-million-dollar bidding war over the project, Warner Bros. Pictures has come out on top, winning the underlying rights.
Despite Cregger both writing and directing his breakout horror movies Barbrairan and Weapons, and directing and co-writing his upcoming Resident Evil movie, THR states that the plan is for Duffield to direct Siren Head. Duffield's upcoming whale feature, Whalefall, is already generating buzz, but the filmmaker is also known for No One Will Save You and for penning Netflix's horror comedy The Babysitter.
Siren Head is not technically a creepypasta, but it most definitely falls into the online urban legend space. The viral horror sensation kicked off when artist Trevor Henderson started sharing images of a tall figure with two siren speakers as a head. The monster is an aggressive, skilled predator, using its sirens to mimic voices and lure its prey.
Before long, theories about the cryptic creature spread across the web, just like with the original Backrooms image. Then came the YouTube short films. YouTuber Shutter Authority has created many Siren Head videos through the years and has compiled his best work into a 30-minute compilation so you can get a taste of what Cregger might have up his sleeve.
Siren Head is just the latest internet legend to be adapted. After Backrooms hit the big screens to rave reviews this May, already earning over $330 million at the box office worldwide on a $10 million budget, it looks like more horror directors have been delving into the world of creepypasta. The Pools is up next this December, based on the water-filled levels of the Backrooms.
