Supergirl has flown into theaters, and that means it's time to get into the Supergirl ending explained. The second movie in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU sees Milly Alcock takes on the iconic superhero, introducing viewers to a Kara Zor-El who loves to party and couldn't be more different than her "nerd" cousin Clark Kent.
Heavily inspired by the comic book miniseries 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the origin movie sees Supergirl team up with a young woman named Ruthye. She's on the hunt for ruthless killer Krem after he murdered her whole family in cold blood. When Supergirl's dog Krypto gets caught up in the crossfire, Kara reluctantly joins her on her mission to hunt him down.
Along the way, the duo meet some unexpected snags including different kinds of suns, alien raiders, and a bounty hunter named Lobo… But not every loose thread is tied up at the end of the new superhero flick, which is where we come in. Below, we get into our Supergirl ending explained, answering some of those all important questions you're left with as the credits roll.
Obviously we will be getting into some heavy spoilers below so make sure you've seen Supergirl before reading on.
Supergirl ending recap
After learning where Krem headed after the assault on Bilquis, Kara Zor-El follows him to Barenton. However, soon after she arrives, she collapses because the planet has both a yellow sun and a green sun, with the latter rendering her completely incapacitated.
Luckily, she was followed by Ruthye, who didn't take no for an answer when it came to her quest for revenge. She picks Kara up and drags her into a cave to help her stay hidden from the Brigands while she's unable to move. She starts having flashbacks to how she ended up on Earth after the fall of Krypton and we see her first meeting with Superman as she drifts in and out of consciousness.
Ruthye goes in search of some water for Kara but ends up being taken captive by the Brigands, ending up next to none other than Lobo in her cell. She's visited by Krem who asks if she wants to reveal where Kara is in exchange for her life, but she spits in his face at the thought.

As Kara still drifts in out of visions of her life trying to fit in on Earth, Ruthye comes up with a plan. She calls back one of the guards and tells them that she wants to give Kara up, but when they open the cage, she attacks them. She sets free Lobo too as they part ways on and begin their assault on the ship. Ruthye heads into the vents to surprise them while Lobo takes a more direct approach on his motorbike.
Ruthye is almost successful, coming face-to-face with Krem, but he overpowers her at the last minute. Thankfully, the green sun has set and the yellow sun has risen, allowing Kara to return to her full strength. She joins Ruthye on the ship as they start fighting the Brigands before Krem manages to flee.
They catch up to him after some pretty epic Mad Max-style action as Ruthye brings her blade to his neck. However, Kara pleads with him to not kill him, as she'll live with it for the rest of her life. She warns her that revenge will not bring her the closure she seeks, and Ruthye reluctantly agrees. Supergirl dispatches him instead, picking up the antidote for Krypto's poisoning from his body.
They return to the ship in order to free the brides who the Brigands had trapped inside before Lobo rides away and Kara and Ruthye head back to Holzherr to save Krypto. The antidote works and the playful pup is back to his mischievous self in no time. Kara watches as he plays with Ruthye from her ship, hesitating about how to depart and leave the young girl alone.
After some hesitation, she asks if Ruthye wants to come with her to celebrate her birthday, belatedly. They jump on the ship and head off, but we don't see what they get up to. Soon after, Kara arrives back in Metropolis, walking into Clark Kent's apartment with Krypto in tow.
She tells him that she's planning to stay a while as she admits that he could have used her help with this "last guy". He's evidently relieved, but has one burning question – is Krypto staying too? The movie ends with Clark chasing the troublesome dog and warning him not to eat chocolate.
How does Supergirl explain what happened to Krypton?
Through a series of flashback scenes we learn that Krypton was not destroyed in a single day due to its unstable core. Instead, Kara's father Zor-El managed to contain Argo City for many years, allowing Kara to grow up there. However, the soil was poisoned and the inhabitants slowly dying so Zor-El vows to send her away to where Superman was sent, using the same kind of escape pod.
One interesting bit of information from this section of the movie is that it confirms that Lex Luthor did not alter the footage of Superman's parents in Superman. As Zor-El mentions, they really did send Kal-El down to Earth to help conquer it.
How did Supergirl end up on Earth?
Kara Zor-El arrives on Earth in the escape pod, with a young Krypto in tow. She arrives near Superman's Fortress of Solitude as he welcomes her. She can't understand a word he's saying and is very confused why he's in his "underwear" but he shows her kindness. He takes her to Metropolis where she tries to adapt to this new world.
Why is Kara Zor-El unable to fight on Barenton?
Just like we saw in Superman, we see Kara dealing with the effects of different suns throughout Supergirl. In the opening scenes, she heads to a planet with a red sun where her powers don't work so that she can enjoy getting drunk. However, Barenton has an event more extreme effect on her. That's because it has a green sun, which emits radiation that acts like Kryptonite, rendering her completely powerless. A yellow sun gives her back her powers, which means that as soon as it rises, she's able to fight again.
Where does Lobo go? Will there be a Lobo movie?
It's not entirely clear where Lobo zooms off to at the end of the movie, but we're going to assume he's after his next bounty. Jason Momoa put himself forward to James Gunn and Peter Safran for the role as soon as their new DCU was confirmed, so we have to assume that it's a character he'll want to return to. This being said, no standalone Lobo movie has been announced yet and Momoa has said he's only interested in the idea if it's rated R (per Deadline). Ball's in your court now, Gunn.
What happens to Krem?
Krem does not make it out of the movie alive. However, it's not Ruthye who kills him, but Supergirl herself. She dispatches him with a sword, leaving him to die on the planet Barenton.
Does Krypto die?
No, thankfully Krypto makes a full recovery. After looking very worse for wear, the antidote works its magic and he's back to his normal cheeky self.
What happens to Ruthye?
Ruthye tells Kara that she's planning to go and live with her aunt and follow in her father's footsteps as a weapon maker. However, she does have time for one last adventure with her new pal before that as they head out to celebrate Supergirl's birthday.
This may not be the last time we see the young girl in the DCU though, as star Eve Ridley has said she's keen to return. As she told GamesRadar+, "Yeah, I hope so. I mean, that's not up to me. DC, come on. I think that she's such an amazing character."
Where will Supergirl appear next?
Supergirl star Milly Alcock has already signed on for her next movie in the DCU. She'll be starring in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, opposite David Corenswet's Supes and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. And don't expect it to just be a cameo either, co-CEO Peter Safran previously told Variety that "she's a major part of what we're doing" in the new movie.
How does Supergirl set up Superman: Man of Tomorrow?
As a result, you might be wondering whether Supergirl sets up the upcoming movie at all. The answer is kinda.
At the very end of Supergirl, Kara arrives back in Metropolis at Superman's flat with Krypto the dog. We see Supes enter after a recent battle and she tells him that she's planning to stick around for a while, which is music to his ears because he tells her that he's always in need of her help.
This means that come Superman: Man of Tomorrow time, Kara and Kal-El will probably have been working together for a while, which should set up how Supergirl plays into that movie.
Is there a Supergirl post-credits scene?
No, there is no Supergirl post-credits scene. You can sit through the credits if you like to listen to Claudia Sarne's epic score, but there are no Easter eggs or DCU setups hiding at the end for you.
Is Batman in Supergirl?
No, Batman does not make a cameo in Supergirl, despite his solo movie still being in the works. The casting of Batman is still something very much in the air at DC Studios so it seems like we'll have to wait a little while longer to see how he works into James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU.
