Whatever your opinion on James Gunn, there's no doubting he's always ready and willing to answer questions on social media about his upcoming DCU projects – even if they're ridiculous.
After one Threads user pointed out that Milly Alcock's Supergirl having ear piercings is at odds with having bulletproof skin, Gunn replied, "As explained in Superman, the same way she gets drunk – she goes to a planet with a red sun. Not to mention she was raised on a chunk of Krypton so didn't even experience super powers until her teens."
So, that answers that. No Kryptonian ear piercer, no intricate use of heat vision, just a plain, old-fashioned piercing on a planet with a red sun – weakening Kara's powers.
A reminder, then, that the canon explanation for how Superman shaves in the comics is even more outlandish: he uses a mirror and heat vision to get the job done. We wouldn't want to be his barber, that's for sure.
Whatever your opinion on Supergirl's choice of accessories, there's no doubt that star Milly Alcock understands the assignment while getting set to appear as Kara in her first standalone movie. Because, as we'll soon discover, she's a flawed hero who is worlds away from the upstanding righteousness of her cousin Superman.
"You don't have to be perfect in order to come to some sort of internal self-resolution. I think that we're kind of thrusted upon this narrative, especially women, that you have to be perfect," Alcock explained during a virtual press conference attended by GamesRadar+ late last year. "I think that Kara is someone who so beautifully leans into her flaws. I think that's really, really special."
While early box office tracking isn't looking too hot, Supergirl is set to roar into cinemas on June 26 as part of DCU Chapter One.
