Jane Russell, the star of classic movies Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Outlaw , has died aged 89.
The actress rose to fame in the early 1940s with Howard Hughes’ Western The Outlaw , and went on to appear in critically acclaimed movies T he Paleface , His Kind Of Woman and Macao .
But she quit acting at the end of the '60s and only made a handful of appearances after that.
“Why did I quit movies?” mused Russell in 1999. “Because I was getting too old! You couldn’t go on acting in those years if you were an actress over 30.”
Russell died of respiratory failure in her Santa Maria home.
