Born of a collaboration between legendary Spanish designer Javier Mariscal and his countryman, Belle Epoque director Fernando Trueba, this is a sexy, soulful animation for grown-ups.

The story’s the stuff of romantic epics (two Cuban musicians falling in and out of love across different continents and decades) but the magic lies in its loving recreation of ’40s Havana.

Mariscal’s skill is evident in images that are as expressive as they are simple.

All buzz, colour and sublime jazz, Chico & Rita is an instant design classic – and cracking cinema too.
