“Mobile games are all full of ads and microtransactions!” Ah, not true, dear reader. Though that was once the primary model for mobile monetization (and indeed still flourishes in that space), gaming on your phone or tablet is no longer solely the province of waiting for turns to replenish or losing the bottom of your playfield to banners. The nominees for the 2015 Golden Joysticks’ Best Handheld/Mobile game offer a variety of experiences both big and small, letting you do everything from save a stranded astronaut to helping a spy make a stealthy getaway. Most importantly, they also let you collect cats.
Look, all of these mobile games are great. That’s why they’re nominated, after all. But it’s hard to argue that Neko Atsume’s charming cat collector doesn’t deserve to win based on whimsy alone. You have a garden. You put out toys and treats in order to entice the neighborhood cats to visit. They thank you by paying you with fish, so that you can buy more toys and treats and attract the really cool cats, like the one who shoves herself into the glass vase (thus proving that cats are liquid) or the chef cat who cooks a pizza on your space heater. And then there’s their little butts.
Whether you are pro- or anti-cat (or simply prefer the fast-paced gameplay of 20 or the “I just can’t quit you”-ness of Monster Hunter), let your voice be heard. The winners are all up to you, cast your vote while you still can!
