X-Men First Class jets in at number one

x-men first class

The X-Men blasted back onto the big screen this weekend, and made their way, quite comfortably, straight to first place at the box office.

Though X-Men: First Class didn’t enjoy an opening weekend anywhere near as profitable as the last two X films ( The Last Stand and Wolverine ), it still enjoyed a decent debut with $54m.

Market analysts are blaming that comparatively low figure ( Wolverine opened with $85m) on the lack of Hugh Jackman – but considering the rave reviews First Class has been receiving, it should definitely have staying power at the box office.

Suffering from less kind reviews was The Hangover: Part II , which fell to second place with $42m, while other sequel Kung Fu Punda 2 plumped for third ($24m). Pirates 4 dropped one spot to fourth ($18m), as did Bridemaids in fifth ($12m).

The rest of the top ten looked pretty the same as last week, with the notable absence of Rio – previously in eighth, it’s now nowhere in sight.

Thor took sixth place ($4.2m), Fast Five reversed into seventh ($3.2m), while Midnight In Paris ($2.9m), Jumping The Broom ($865,000) and Something Borrowed ($835,000) were all in eighth, ninth and tenth position respectively.

Next week, the mighty Super 8 opens – expect it to completely annihilate the competition.
