Prime Day PC deals will pop back up this October, so here's the builds I'm expecting to see

Prime Day PC deals are officially set to return this October, and the sequel sale could set some impressive new record lows. I know for a fact many of you will be waiting for discounts to return before picking up the perfect pre-built rig, and while desktop systems are still more expensive than I'd like, they'll be at their cheapest during Amazon's event.

I'm fully expecting to see savings on the best gaming PC builds during Prime Day "Big Deal Days", and the deepest discounts should happen between October 7-8. That's when Amazon's sale is set to officially take place, but I'd keep an eye on the retailer outside of those dates just in case system savings emerge. At the same time, I'd also keep close watch at Best Buy and Newegg for rival discounts, as things can get pretty competitive.

I've got plenty of Prime Day PC deal hunting tips and a good idea of what to expect down below. However, my main piece of advice is to keep an eye out for Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 and AMD Radeon RX 7000 series. If retailers have last-gen builds still available, they'll likely be looking to clear out their warehouses before even newer builds show up, and this could be your last chance to grab a previous generation machine at a solid price.

What to expect from October Prime Day PC deals

It may sound silly, but the best gaming PC deals from these big Prime Day events almost always come from the likes of Newegg and Best Buy. Walmart is also known to throw out some good deals, but Newegg in particular is famous for running its own sales events at the same time as Prime Day. That isn't to say Amazon itself won't have good deals, just that it's worth keeping your sights set on broader retailers.

We always see PCs on the entry level of the gaming spec sheet get brought down to more reasonable prices, so if you've got a budget under a grand, there's no reason you won't be able to pick up a decent gaming rig. Here's a closer look at what specs to look for up and down the price range. These are more of a reference for 40 Series Nvidia machines, mainly because while the 50 Series is now available, the prices for them are brand new and are much harder to pin down into a specific bracket. In our eyes, these prices should be used as a minimum or loose guide when you shop around.

It's worth noting that if those price ranges seem broad, it's because your mileage can vary depending on the brand of PC, the retailer you buy from, and what components make up each build.

For the entry-level range, you're probably looking at iBuyPower, IPASON, CyberPowerPC, and other smaller brands found on Newegg and Amazon for this sort of deal. These are very worth considering if you're buying your first gaming PC or need to upgrade to newer-gen parts.

Elsewhere, we're likely to see brands like ASUS, Alienware, HP, and Acer pull deals out of the Prime Day hat. These configurations can vary, and we usually see discounts from the mid-range bracket all the way through to expensive high-end monsters.

To sound like a broken record, just keep our gaming PC golden rule in mind. Think about futureproofing, because you don't want to get a year or two down the road and realize you can't make the awesome component upgrade you'd like to because your motherboard is locked into an older generation.

What to expect from Prime Day PC component deals

CPU deals: As we head toward the summer sale, CPU deals are going to seem very enticing. We have so many DDR5-compatible processors on the shelves now, and since Intel has had a bit of a PR crisis to deal with in the last year, I'd be willing to bet that low, low prices will be on the cards for its Core Ultra series, as well as its much more accessible 13th and 14th gen options.

The 13th and 14th generations from Intel are worth watching, mainly because they're older but still offer great performance compared to the newer Intel Core Ultra series, which requires a different motherboard socket.

With AMD, we're always going to be looking at prices that undercut the competition. The Ryzen 7000 series could see some new low price drops, and I'd expect the 9000 Series to get really competitive in terms of pricing. In fact, this might be your best chance yet to grab an X3D processor, particularly the newer ones that dropped after the 9000 Series.

Of course, the staple for any online sales event is the Ryzen 5000 Series, which has to be the go-to for any budget PC builder out there. Again, we would recommend grabbing DDR5-compatible parts wherever possible, but the 5000 Series is still so capable if you're building a starter PC and you want to spend as little as possible. Particularly alluring are the latest chips in this family, which AMD launched more of this year alongside the Ryzen 9000 Series.

Prime day GPU deals: We've seen the arrival of the Nvidia RTX 50 Series GPUs this year, as well as the AMD Radeon RX 9070 and 9070XT. Prime Day might be your first opportunity to get some of these cards at their genuine MSRPs, since inflation has already hit a number of them and made it hard to find them for reasonable prices.

As we've been seeing throughout the year though, some of the best value ways to get hold of these is actually in prebuilt machines - if you require more than one upgrade, anyway.

The RTX 40 series is definitely going to be more affordable during Prime Day now that they all have younger alternatives on the shelves. If stock isn't an issue, these are maybe the ones you should aim for if you haven't upgraded your GPU in a number of years.

On the AMD side of things, the 9070 and 9070XT have proven very popular, especially since they offer more native performance over the Nvidia cards they're competing with. During Prime Day, I'd expect to see some decent prices if the stock can hold. Alternatively, you could opt for on of the RX 7000 series GPUs, which are still excellent, and provide brilliant value for money in the current market. We've been seeing prices for the 7900 XTX get lower of late, and if you're keen on that powerhouse of a graphics card, it's worth waiting til Prime Day to see just how much value you can squeeze out of a purchase. The 7600 XT could see some seriously competitive deal offerings since it sits nearer the lower end of the spectrum. There are also price discrepancies between the 7800XT and 7900 GRE that could get interesting in the 1440p/4K battle with Nvidia.

Memory: To sound like a broken record, Prime Day and Black Friday have to be the best time to grab DDR5 RAM. It's only going to continue getting cheaper, and we're beginning to see more 32GB kits go for around $100, which we'd recommend.

DDR4 will be available for super cheap prices, but again, futureproofing is worth the extra money here.

A Samsung 9100 Pro review image of the drive installed on a motherboard

(Image credit: Future / Duncan Robertson)

SSDs: The golden price bracket you should shoot for is $60 for 1TB and $100 for 2TB. If you can get as close to those numbers as possible, you'll be grabbing a great deal. Unfortunately, SSD prices have inflated in recent years, meaning it can be harder to find drives at these ends of the price scale. Think of that as the target, and shoot as close as you can for them. At the same time, look out for dodgy price history details, because retailers like to make original prices seem higher than they are to make a deal more appealing.

If the big brands fail you, though, we've been predominantly testing budget brands in the last year to prepare for these bigger sales events so we can still recommend decent options for fair prices.

Prime Day PC deals: FAQ

When will October Prime Day PC deals start?

Prime Day PC deals will return between October 7-8, so you'll have two days to grab fresh rig offers. However, discounts can pop up ahead of the sale and last until after the event, meaning it's worth checking for offers even outside of the event window.

Do you have to be a Prime member to access Prime deals?

Yes, you'll need a Prime Membership to gain access to the more exclusive parts of Amazon's sale, particularly the Prime-exclusive offers. Funnily enough, sometimes for Prime Day, we see only a few of those, and other times we see more. When it comes to PCs specifically, a lot of the best deals actually come from competing retailers who run their own sales at the same time. Either way, you don't necessarily have to pay for a Prime subscription if you play your cards right. If you're not an existing Prime member, you'll be able to take advantage of a 30-day free trial closer to the event.

Amazon Prime | 30-day free trial

Amazon Prime | 30-day free trial
You will likely need to be a registered Prime member in order to benefit from this year's sale, but there are ways around paying for it. If you sign up for a free 30-day trial today, you'll be covered for the big event. Just be sure to cancel before it renews into a fully paid subscription.

Hardware Editor

One of my earliest memories is playing SuperMario64 and wondering why the controller I held had three grips, but I only had two hands. Ever since I've been in love with video games and their technology. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Journalism, I contributed to the Scottish Games Network and completed an Editorial Internship at Expert Reviews. Over the last decade, I’ve been managing my own YouTube channel about my love of games too. These days, I'm one of the resident hardware nerds at GamesRadar+, and I take the lead on our coverage of gaming PCs, VR, controllers, gaming chairs, and content creation gear. Now, I better stop myself here before I get talking about my favourite games like HUNT: Showdown, Dishonored, and Towerfall Ascension.
