Torrez' location and Price of Magic quest guide in Gothic 1 Remake
Torrez in the Old Camp will teach you spells in the Price of Magic quest
Torrez in the Gothic 1 Remake is the first NPC players are likely to meet who teaches you spells in a quest called The Price of Magic. This is a relatively easy quest to complete and you can come out with a free spell if you do complete it, but Torrez' location can be a bit inconsistent for both starting and handing in the quest, as I'll explain in our guide below. Here's how to find Torrez, complete the Price of Magic quest, and to learn either the Fire Bolt or Healing spell for free in the Gothic Remake.
Torrez' location in Gothic Remake
Torrez is found in the Old Camp, usually by day in the covered Market and merchant's area in the South. However, after completing the Price of Magic quest with him, he moves into the central castle area of Old Camp that many players spent the early hours of the game trying to gain access to, moving around the Church.
Price of Magic walkthrough in Gothic Remake
If you want to learn magic from Torrez, you'll need to complete the Price of Magic quest that he gives you. Here's a quick walkthrough of how to do that:
- Speak to Torrez and tell him that you have a letter for the Fire Mages. This will lead to dialogue where he suggests teaching you magic.
- He'll ask you to get him Two Wolf Claws and a Piece of Parchment and bring them back to him.
- The Wolf Claws can be bought from multiple merchants in the Old Camp. I bought mine from Mordrag. If you have been trained in hunting you can kill wolves and take their claws, though it's very unlikely to either win or have this skillset at this phase in the game.
- Parchment can be bought from Andrew the map-seller, who lives West of the main North gate in the Old Camp, usually hanging around a boiling cauldron.
- Bring all three items back to Torrez and he'll offer to teach you Rune Magic for five LP.
- Accept, and he'll give you a Rune for one of two spells: Healing or Firebolt. This completes The Price of Magic quest and grants you 250 experience.
Completing the quest also unlocks Torrez as a proper merchant who deals in magical items and related goods, though he's likely to relocate to the central Old Camp after this point, as mentioned above.
Firebolt or Healing spell choice
When Torrez gives you the choice of a Rune between Firebolt or Healing, I definitely recommend that you pick Firebolt if you're a first time player. Healing isn't too hard to do without magic in Gothic Remake (just eat food or healing potions), but at this early phase in the game, Firebolt is a massive step up in damage from the vast majority of available attacks, doing 35 damage and leaving lasting burns on enemies.
