How to put a torch away in Gothic 1 Remake
To put away a torch away in Gothic 1 Remake, you need to wait for it to burn out.
To put away a torch in Gothic 1 Remake is a surprisingly nuanced question, as while it's easy enough for the hero to draw and light a burning torch, to stow one away and put it out isn't made entirely clear. You can stick it in the ground where it continues to burn, but there's no apparent way to put it in your pocket, at least as the Gothic Remake will tell you from the start.
How to unequip a torch in Gothic 1 Remake and put it away
To put away a torch in the Gothic 1 Remake isn't an option, at least not directly. If you're holding a lit torch and try to unequip it or switch to a different item in your hand, the Hero sticks it in the ground automatically where it continues to burn.
The only real way to get your torch back in your pocket is a bit of a workaround: after discovering where to sleep in Gothic 1 Remake, stick the torch in the ground as normal and then take a nap. When you wake up, it will have burnt out, and you can pick it up and put it back in your pocket.
However, out in the wild that won't really be an option. Once a torch starts burning, you need to make peace with the idea that it ultimately probably won't be going back in your pocket. You can re-equip it into your hand by picking it back up, but you can't stow it in your pocket without the approach mentioned above.
