What does Mud do in Gothic 1 Remake and should you let him join you?
Mud is an annoying NPC in the Gothic 1 Remake who follows you around making constant comments
Mud in the Gothic 1 Remake is an annoying character and NPC who offers to join you if you'll let him, but should you agree to have him follow you? What does Mud actually do as a teammate, and does it make his constant irritating comments worth it? I'll explain Mud in the Gothic Remake and if there's any real advantage to having him tag along on your adventures.
Should you let Mud join you in Gothic 1 Remake?
I'll be honest, having played Gothic 1 Remake for a while and checked other accounts, there is no reason that I can see to let Mud follow you around and join you.
Mud is just a joke character, similar to the Adoring Fan in Bethesda games, but while he doesn't actively harm you, he serves no beneficial purpose whatsoever. Here's a rundown of my experiences:
- Mud will follow you and put in an annoying comment roughly every couple of minutes or so.
- If you tell him to stop talking or piss off, it makes no difference, whatever he says. No dialogue option will cause him to leave.
- Mud does not engage in combat or provide any gameplay bonus, with one exception: occasionally enemies might attack him instead of you. However, he doesn't attack them back, merely running around like a headless chicken.
- Mud mentions various characters, plans and ideas, but these are all flavour. As far as I found, he doesn't impact any questline or interaction in any way, so don't expect him to help with the Gothic 1 Remake lockpicking minigame or anything else.
Basically, there isn't more to Mud than first appears. He's a joke by the developers, in that he is as simple and irritating as he seems at first glance, and the longer you keep him around trying to find out if there's some greater depth or reward, the more you're falling for the joke.
How to get Mud to stop following you in Gothic 1 Remake
The only way to get Mud to leave you along and stop being a follower is to attack him. You don't have to kill him (a couple of hits will cause him to run away and return to his hut in the Old Camp), but there are no negative results if you do kill him.
If he dies, he drops the following items:
- Water (1)
- Club (1)
- Ore Nugget (5)
