"CoD got it. Halo didn't" – Black Ops 1 and 2 ports battered Halo Campaign Evolved on PlayStation last month, analyst says, because $60 for a "graphical touch-up" is a rough sell

An analyst has shared why Call of Duty's Black Ops 1 and 2 ports are vastly outperforming Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation.

Over on Twitter, Alinea Analytics head of market analysis Rhys Elliott posts a chart of estimates of July's best-selling games on PlayStation consoles. Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 ports are right at the top, with the latter estimated at 8.2 million sold, making it far and away the highest-selling game of the month, while Black Ops 1 is estimated at only 3 million.

Halo, on the other hand, was estimated to have sold around 351,000 copies in July.

"Beyond the CoD doing ports doing GANGBUSTERS, the thing that stands out is Halo's notably slow start on PlayStation, which ironically stings even more next to the success of two effort-light CoD ports," Elliott explains. Not to mention Halo's stock has somewhat fallen in the last decade and a half, with Elliott adding, "One can’t help wondering what could have been if Halo had kept the trajectory it had around Halo 3 and Reach."

And ultimately, he believes price is the main factor, saying, "A proven, beloved old game, dropped at the right moment and, just as importantly, at the RIGHT PRICE, can out-earn almost anything new and buy a bit of breathing room in the slate."

And while the Call of Duty ports are kind of expensive, they launched with a pretty significant limited-time discount for PS Plus subscribers. Elliott adds, "CoD got it. Halo didn't. Sixty dollars for what’s essentially a graphical touch-up of a 2001 game was always gonna be a rough sell, and players clearly weren’t having it."
