The Russo brothers say Secret Wars is officially in pre-production, but admit they're still working on Avengers: Doomsday
The directors are working on both projects at the same time
Avengers: Doomsday may be edging ever closer, but it seems like it's not very near completion yet. In a new interview, the directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, shared that they're still hard at work on the Marvel Phase 6 movie as well as building up production on their second feature, Avengers: Secret Wars.
"We're doing some work still on Doomsday and will be until probably they rip it out our hands in November," Joe Russo told Deadline at SXSW London. "That just means they have to give it to other people to finish it for a few weeks, that doesn't mean anything other than that. Then we're in the middle of what we would call pre-production on Secret Wars. We like doing many things at the same time."
Avengers: Doomsday has a release date of December 18, 2026 while Avengers: Secret Wars is currently set to follow on with a date set of December 17 2026. Fantastic Four actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach hinted that filming was due to start in August earlier this year – which roughly lines up with the project being in pre-production now. However, it still seems like it might be a bit of a tight turnaround to that 2027 release date.
At the moment, barely anything is known about Avengers: Secret Wars as Marvel has still got a tight lid on all of the Avengers: Doomsday details. What has been confirmed is that Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom and the first film will feature a team-up of all of the major heroes in the MCU at the moment.
The casts of Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, Black Panther, and Captain America will all star, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and Tom Hiddleston. They'll be joined by several mutants too as the X-Men cast from the Fox movies enter the MCU.
