Spider-Man star Tom Holland told Marvel to take inspiration from Christopher Nolan: "I was really able to lay down the law"
Tom Holland thinks his opinion of Nolan will "upset Marvel a bit"
Tom Holland has been very candid about working across Marvel and Christopher Nolan's new movie, The Odyssey, last year. The actor said he was blown away by the preparation that Nolan put in, adding that he would often call his Spider-Man producers to urge them to up their game.
"I think coming from the Marvel space, and I think this will upset Marvel a little bit – his level of preparation is unlike anything I’ve ever seen," Holland told GQ. “There's not a single question you can ask him that he can't answer immediately. He's also quite simple in the way that he works. There are times when they use fancy camera tricks and things like that, but he really does come to set and he finds the shot."
The actor gave an example of one setup of a shot that was scheduled for two days and Nolan managed to get it done in one, before nightfall. Holland was very inspired by the experience of working with The Dark Knight director, explaining that he would often call his Spider-Man collaborators from set.
"I was really able to lay down the law and say, 'We are not going to come to set and figure it out,'" Holland added to the publication. "'We need to know why we are making this movie beyond the fact that it’s Spider-Man 4 and they make loads of money and we're going to just have a big summer. Why are we making this movie?'"
He added that Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton was "super instrumental" in helping this. Holland continued: "It was just really great to constantly be calling up the studio and [producers] Amy [Pascal] and Rachel [O'Connor], who I love, and be like, 'Well, Chris is doing it this way. This is how I think we should be doing it.'"
Holland has a big July ahead of him, starring first as Telemachus, Odysseus's son, in The Odyssey, which is out on July 17. Then he returns as Peter Parker in new Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which swings into theaters on July 31. For more upcoming movies, check out our breakdown of 2026 movie release dates.
