Red Dead Redemption rides into town

Rockstar's cowboy sequel looks gorgeous on PS3 and 360

Rockstar Games has just announced a sequel to PS2's excellent cowboy-em-up Red Dead Revolver, set to release this autumn. Marked for release on PS3 and Xbox 360, Read Dead Redemption will feature open-world gameplay set at the turn of the 20th Century.

Above: Bet you use Triangle to steal horses

However, this isn't actually the first time we've seen it. Remember that infamous E3 2005 PS3 showreel? Well, just before Killzone 2's target footage was shown for the first time, there was an untitled Rockstar game that looked like this:

Above: A rather blurry screenshot taken from the 2005 E3 showreel

Now look at a similar shot from the finished game. Looks like yet another E3 2005 promise that's actually been delivered. Cripes.

Above: The actual game. Pretty epic, eh?

Just how big this sprawling landscape actually is remains to be seen, of course. But suffice to say we're very excited about this one. Especially if it includes multiplayer - imagine one team trying to protect a stagecoach from bandits, or shoot-outs around the towns at sunset.

The game will use Rockstar's Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), and will feature frontier towns, rolling prairies teeming with wildlife, and perilous mountain passes.

Above: Could this sort of thing be included as a multiplayer element?

Along the way, players will experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it.

We can't wait. Expect us to be all over this as soon as we get the chance to see it. in the meantime, you can see the rest of the sunset-soaked screenshots here.

I loved GUN, but never played RDR, but I've been waiting for this. Can't wait. Looks amazing. Rockstar have gone all out with attention to detail.

Wouldn't it be something if they had the story in San Andreas during the gold rush era! Hopefully the map will at least be that size.

HAVE MY BABIES ROCKSTAR! I freaking loved Red Dead Revolver, the only thing that I'm not going to like is the fact that there won't be any of the old characters.

GUN was a really fun being an open-world game, but honestly I enjoyed the first RDR better than GUN. I'm hoping this turns out really well, because old west games are the bomb. And being on the RAGE engine means Euphoria and fantastic gameplay.

Three questions here:1) do any of you think it might have the same playability as gta 4 because those graphics and realistics kicked A$$. 2) could this be a another gun but with better graphics? 3)will it be a small open world or big open world because the west was pretty big and unsettled at the turn of the 20th century? And just 1 hope. That it comes out before October!!

Last I checked it was to be released on Nov. 17th or somewhere around there and i also believe that it will have a similiar feel to it from gta4 which will be real koo'. My personal opinion it will definitely be better than, GUN. Why I think that is because red dead revolver was incredible, but there was no world to explore only episodes then, on GUN that's when they introduced the free world roaming and etc. over the years Rockstar has made some titles to live up to, but GTA4 took gaming for them in the world by suprise and like I said I don't see them failing after GTA4! I already paid this game off because I have no worries and im glad they kept pushing the release date back like they did with GTA4, because they play games just like us and their enviroment they work in is so opinionated that set backs are only an act of let's get our sh!t together! Gamers DO NOT WORRY!
