Originally dubbed Imogene after Kristen Wiig’s troubled central character, the latest dramedy from Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman ( American Splendor ) can’t decide if it’s a broad farce or a poignant portrait.
Small wonder then, that it falls short on both counts, failing to earn either Bridesmaids -sized laughs or nods of recognition.
Wiig tries hard as a failed playwright whose botched faux-suicide forces her back in with dotty mom Annette Bening.
Alas, watching her turn that frown upside-down isn’t nearly as much fun as Matt Dillon’s turn as a CIA-obsessed fantasist.
