James Gunn scotches rumours of a Guardians / Avengers crossover

With The Avengers and Guardians Of The Galaxy the two trump cards in Marvel’s pack, there has been plenty of speculation as to whether the two super-teams may cross over at some point down the track…

However, Guardians director James Gunn has poured cold water on the notion of any kind of team-up, asserting that the two franchises will likely stay very separate from each other.

“We really are separate from the Avengers,” says Gunn to Screen Junkies, “and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians’ play in all this. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save.”

“Earth is the Avengers’ province,” continues the director. “Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s going to happen.”

Indeed, while there’s an obvious appeal to the idea of throwing the two teams together, Guardians worked so well at least in part because it felt like a self-contained adventure, as opposed to a piece in a larger jigsaw. Although a Hulk / Rocket buddy movie would certainly be fun…

Avengers: Age Of Ultron will open in the UK on 24 April 2015 and the US on 1 May 2015, while Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 will open in the US on 5 May 2017 before arriving in the UK on 28 July 2017.
