Xbox delays Fable to 2027 but insists "the game is in great shape"
The company had previously pushed back on rumors about a delay
Fable will be delayed to February 2027, Xbox has announced. The RPG had previously been set for a fall 2026 launch, and chief content officer Matt Booty insists that it's coming along just fine – the company just wants to be sure that it has the best possible chance to find its audience.
"In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves," Xbox says in a tweet. "We’re excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at XBOX Games Showcase on June 7."
Playground Games is "doing really well on Fable," Booty says in a podcast accompanying the announcement. "The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We're excited about where the game is. We want to make sure that that game has a window all to its own, so we are going to move it from this fall to February. And again, we really just want it to have its own moment to shine."
This delay had been rumored for some time, but Xbox had repeatedly reiterated its plans to launch Fable this year. The announcement notes a number of major games scheduled to release this year, including notable Microsoft-published titles ranging from Gears of War: E-Day to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
But the big name is, of course, GTA 6. As analyst Mat Piscatella reports on Bluesky, 34.7% of US console and PC players intend to buy the next Grand Theft Auto game. By comparison, just 5.5% of them intend to buy Fable. Certainly, there's a massive audience for a long-awaited follow-up to some of the best RPGs of all time, but with the current economy forcing gamers to make hard choices about where to spend their money, it's no surprise that Xbox wants to give Fable some breathing room.
