Egyptian God of War rumors rekindled as dataminer seemingly uncovers cut Ragnarok dialogue: "Just like the beginning of Ragnarok was hidden in the 2018 files"

Some seemingly unearthed God of War Ragnarok dialogue has fans speculating over the next game in the franchise as it appears to hint at the rumored Egyptian setting.

Over on the God of War Ragnarok subreddit, a user known as TheMorse_ has posted that they have found hidden content in the files of God of War Ragnarok. In this file, they claim there's unused dialogue from the ending of the 2022 release that sets up future events for the series. Notably Athena – who was a major character in the Greek trilogy, with a cameo in 2018's title – would return in a scene in which she talks about Atreus breaking the Mask of Creation at the end.

Perhaps more interestingly, the other dialogue supposedly found has Atreus traveling around other pantheons with a new companion called Mau, which can only communicate by saying the word "Mau" but Atreus understands it perfectly (TheMorse_ likens this to Groot from Marvel). They point out that Mau is the Ancient Egyptian word for cat (presumably an onomatopoeia, which I love) as well as the name of one of the forms of Ra – the Egyptian deity of the sun. And given the rumored next step for the franchise is a game set in Egyptian mythology, that's certainly an interesting link.

Of course, I have no way to verify this personally unless I too datamine the game (which I don't know how to do), so taking it with a grain of salt is always a good move (however, TheMorse_ does provide the full text scripts of both God of War 2018 and Ragnarok).

And with these scenes apparently being removed, it could imply that maybe Egypt was originally in the plans, but could potentially have been pivoted away from. That being said, these files were hidden in Ragnarok "just like the beginning of Ragnarok was hidden in the 2018 files" according to TheMorse_, so you never know. In any case, it's an interesting bit of trivia about the game.
