The MCU's Spider-Man has already fought Thanos, met his multiverse selves, and taken on Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man as his super-powered mentor.
The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day is keen on scaling things back for the webslinger, though. So much so, in fact, that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is pointing to an MCU first for the fourth standalone Tom Holland-starring Spidey movie.
"It is the first Spider-Man film that we’ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man," Feige explained to Empire. "He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly."
At least in the comics, Spider-Man is typically characterized by his down-on-his-luck relationships, continually juggling his secret identity with the pressure of living paycheck to paycheck.
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man perhaps best reflected the push-and-pull of Peter Parker's professional responsibilities with his personal life, though it's a character beat that has largely been ignored in the MCU so far.
The Spider-Man: No Way Home ending – which saw the world forget Peter Parker was ever Spider-Man – was a reset for the wallcrawler, with the hero relocating to a suitably grubby New York apartment and striking – and swinging – out alone in the world, with nary an ally in sight. Brand New Day, then, seems to be making good on its title and nudging Spider-Man nearer his comic-book counterpart.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, opens in cinemas on July 31. Its first trailer launched via 24-hour piecemeal rollout back in March, with plenty of speculation surrounding the identity of Sadie Sink's mystery character.
