Makoto Shinkai is teaming up with Crunchyroll to release his new anime movie... that we still know nothing about.
Per a press release, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment co-distribute Shinkai's new film, as they did with Suzume. The 2022 Golden Globe-nominated movie marked Shinkai's sixth film after 2019's Weathering With You. Per the release, "Plot details, along with the title and release date, are not being disclosed at this time."
Shinkai's career began in 1998 with the short film The World Be Enclosed, and he would later release his first feature-length film, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, in 2004. Of course, Shinkai is best known for Your Name, which became the second-highest-grossing movie of all time in Japan, and is widely regarded as one of the best anime movies of all time. The 2016 movie follows a teenage boy and girl who attempt to find each other after switching bodies, and currently sits at a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The filmmaker announced his new project back in 2024. Shinkai previously teased the movie on Twitter, writing: "The entire staff is working hard every day on my new film. I'm confident it's going to be a great film, so please hang in there just a little longer until the announcement!” We'll fill you in when we know more about the new project.
