Jason Momoa has exited as the lead of the Helldivers movie, just two months after the director said he was "only person" who could pull it off
Sony is searching for a new lead
Jason Momoa has exited the upcoming Helldivers movie, which is based on the Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game franchise. While the movie remains very much alive, a reason has not been given for the Game of Thrones star's exit as of yet, per Deadline.
It will be a real blow for director Justin Lin though who recently teased at CinemaCon back in April that they were about to head to New Zealand to start filming. At the time, he also opened up about why Momoa was the perfect person for the movie, telling audiences: "Helldivers balances satire with humanity... and the only person who I think can pull this off is Jason Momoa."
Momoa did have a lot on his 2026 plate already with filming currently taking place on A Minecraft Movie 2 and pre-production taking place on the next Fast and Furious movie. In terms of releases, he'll be busy with press too with Supergirl, Dune Part Three and Street Fighter all arriving this year.
Plot details for the Helldivers movie are being kept under wraps but it's expected that it will be based on the game sequel Helldivers 2. This follows a group of elite soldiers called the Helldivers who must work together to protect Super Earth from aliens amid an intergalactic war.
No replacement actor has been named yet for Helldivers, but the community does have an idea. "The best idea, in my opinion, is a bunch of stars or cameos, who die within minutes and then move on to the next one," wrote one fan on Reddit. "After all, they're supposed to be wearing helmets and we won't recognize them, and I don't think they'd spend a fortune hiring actors whose faces we never see. But instead of having a single protagonist, it would be better to have the protagonist change with each death." What do you reckon, Sony?
Helldivers is expected to arrive on November 10, 2027. In the meantime, check out our guides to all of the upcoming video game adaptations and our list of the most exciting upcoming movies coming soon.
