Joss Whedon has no immediate plans to return to Marvel

Joss Whedon’s three-year Marvel contract is up, Avengers: Age Of Ultron is descending upon cinemas and it sounds as though the man himself is ready to do something new. Will he return to the MCU? Not any time soon, by the sounds of it…

“I think having fulfilled that dream [of making superhero movies], I think I'm going to have to do something else,” says Whedon to IGN. “Have another dream, and that would mean sleeping.”

“I don’t think I’ll ever get that far away from it,” he says, before reverting to his original position. “I plan a rest - a longer rest - perhaps an eternal rest. I have no immediate plans.”

However, for those mourning the end of the era, Whedon has some words of encouragement: the MCU will continue to grow bigger and better without him.

“[Kevin Feige is] not interested in making a formula,” says Whedon. “He’s interested in creating a universe. How long will he do it for? Erm, until he dies? He’s interested in creating new versions of the superhero movies - something that doesn’t fall into a pattern. So it’s going to be around for quite a while.”

Co-starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, Avengers: Age Of Ultron will open in the UK tomorrow and the US on 1 May 2015.
